We're Off and Running!!

What an AWESOME first week!!  AlthoughI have to admit, I'm jealous of the fact that I can't wear shorts to school with this searing heat but such is life!

Students have been getting the hang of transitioning between classes.  It'll be a piece of cake in no time. This year brings a lot of change, from changing classes to (some) procedures, renovations at school, and of course car pick up.  "Sharks' Station" is a work in progress, and it WILL get better!  Also, if your child has a doctor's appointment or needs to leave school early, PLEASE make sure you pick them up before 2:30 pm.  After that time, parents will be required to pick their child up at regular dismissal time.  We REALLY appreciate your cooperation and patience.

If you'd like to keep up to date on nightly homework assignments and such, please visit our homework website, School Notes .  There, you can sign up to receive e-mail notifications when the site is updated, which is daily.

PLEASE don't forget to send in your child's baby pic with their name written on the back!! We'dlike to get them all in as soon as possible and over to Ms. Tippins, who's in charge of the yearbook!

Thank you in advance for your support as communication between us is what helps make this possible!!

Have an AWESOME week!!

Where Have YOU Been?

I thought it was April showers bring May flowers?  Well, it could be worse...like a lot hotter!  I hope everyone is enjoying their summer "vaca" with family and friends.  Wait...where are my manners?

WELCOME TO FIFTH GRADE!!!  August 14th isn't too far away.  We're all totally psyched for our incoming fifth graders, AND to our newest teammate Mrs. Samantha Crisafulli!  We couldn't be more excited to welcome her into our neighborhood!

As many of you already know, we will be departmentalized this year to better serve our fabulous fifth graders!  Here is who will be teaching each subject:

Mrs. Julie Baker: Math
Mr. Bill Kolesnik: Math
Mrs. Samantha Crisafulli: Science
Mrs. Susan Brown: Reading/Language Arts
Mrs. Marcia Eby: Reading/Social Studies

I set up this blog last year in order to provide a kind of "all in one stop shop" for parents and students during their final year at Beachland.  Even though we will each be teaching different subjects, we'll try to make this specific to all pertinent fifth grade information.

This blog will be updated with more information as we get closer to the beginning of school.  Below, you will find our supply list for the upcoming school year to print for your convenience.  We look forward to meeting all of you, and hope you have a fun and relaxing rest of the summer!

Remember Me?

WOW!  What a lapse between posts!  So much going on, and Sea Camp is next week, and my brother is going to have his first child born on April 1! Oy vey!

Well, first off, I hope everyone had an AWESOME spring break!  Don't get me wrong, but wasn't it supposed to be warmer?  Just a little?

Students don't have school April 1.  They must've known that was the day I became an uncle!  When we come back on Tuesday, we'll be reading about classification as it relates to science in preparation for our trip to the Keys.  In math, we'll begin our unit on geometry.

I wanted to share with you a really neat site that I discovered over break called Wonderopolis.  Wonderopolis is a place where wonder and learning are nurtured through the power of discovery, creativity and imagination.  It's an idea that has been "brought to life" by the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL).  You see children not only for who they are but for all they can become.  It's a place found in a curious question or an everyday adventure.  Be sure to check it out!

Happy New Year to everyone!!  I apologize for such a lapse between posts!  It was "that time of year," but we're back and better than ever!  Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and generosity towards our classes during the holiday party and towards us!  We couldn't be more fortunate and grateful for being allowed to do what we do!

This week, we've begun our poetry unit.  This is always a favorite. We have been reading and learning about the difference between poetry and prose, rhyme, meter, and figurative language. Students have also been learning about different types of poems and writing their own acrostics and cinquains. We will continue this unit for a few weeks with other types of poetry. Students will be compiling their poems into an individual poetry book as a culminating activity.

Don't forget that next week is filled with early release days.  Students will be dismissed at 1:40pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Friday is a teacher workday, and then the following Monday is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Have a phenomenal week!!
